The issue is further
complicated by the fact that a
capacity may not be present at
birth but still be innate. By the
term "innate" psychologists
mean that a particular
behavior, trait, or perceptual
achievement is genetically
determined or "wired in," the
result of evolutionary
adaptation. But the function
may not manifest itself until
later in life, a consequence of
normal maturation in a
suitable environment. For
example, certain aspects of
sexual behavior are surely
innately determined in various
species but are not displayed
until the animal has matured.
Similarly, the visual nervous
system, the maturation of
which is innately determined,
requires exposure to light or,
more importantly, patterned
light to mature normally. Given
these complexities, it is not
surprising that only now are we
obtaining definitive evidence
on the question of the role of
experience in the genesis of
size and shape constancy.
